It is often hard for graphic design students to believe that a career can be made doing something they truly love. Finding the first job in graphic design is a great opportunity to provide career exploration and to continue the education. Before beginning a job search it will be necessary to do a little self evaluation. This will better prepare you to know the types of jobs that will showcase your strengths as well as to prepare yourself for sometimes challenging interviewing questions. You should know yourself, your work and the job market. Taking the time to realistically know strengths and weaknesses of yourself and your work will better prepare you for the next step.

The next step is to create a design portfolio. Keep in mind that people will remember best what they see first and last. Your portfolio should only contain your best work that you are willing to discuss and should also showcase your ability to sketch, brainstorm and think creatively. It will be very beneficial to take advantage of any courses or advising sessions on portfolios. Show your portfolio to teachers, advisers or professionals and listen to any feedback they provide. Any person looking for a job should have a resume, but for a designer this is another opportunity to showcase your talent. Construct your resume to reflect typographical design skills you have, it is also a good idea to design and print your own business cards. These two documents will give you additional points to talk about during the interview.
