How to Become a Graphic Designer
Choosing to become a graphic designer is very much in demand today. There are many directions that a candidate can go in terms of where to focus one’s specialty. It helps too if the candidate has an eye for design, is a good visual problem solver and knows how to arrange design concepts in a creative manner. The role of the faculty is both client and mentor. This is good to keep in mind when doing research on different graphic design programs. Building a portfolio will also be important because this is what potential employers will want to see. Different graphic design schools offer a specific focus or slant such as multimedia (perhaps in television), animation, web development and advertising. It is important that the prospective student understands what the slant is and knows what slant they are personally after.
There are two options to consider when choosing a program. A short term two year program will teach the basics and provide a certificate. This will not offer the highest paying jobs but provides an entry level position. Often where the student does their practicum that company will hire them. The second option is a three or four year Bachelor of Fine Arts program. There is no guarantee of a higher paying job with this degree but it shows that the candidate has taken their field of study seriously. It is a good idea to learn how good the hiring rate is for the students graduating from the schools one is considering. If it is low, then perhaps the school is not offering a high enough quality education.
The location of the school should also be kept in mind. The further it is from one’s home the more costly it is going to be to get educated. It is also possible to get a graphic design degree online so one never has to leave their home. To learn more about what direction one might want to go in there are many books that they can take out of the library to get better informed. There are also online blogs and forums to follow for the latest news. Doing one’s due diligence will help to make the best decision for how to become a graphic designer.
